ComedySportz’s 30th anniversary & why you need to be there

And now, in Chicago Entertainment News:

Have you guys experienced Chicago’s beloved ComedySportz, “the funniest sport you’ll ever play?” You’ve probably heard of it, because a) they’ve been around for 30 years, and b) I recently co-hosted a superbly fun event there and no one was exempt from my social media excitement.

In a town this saturated with fantastic comedic and theatrical experiences, lemme tell you a little bit more about why ComedySportz should be on your date night, family outing, and friends-in-town radar:

They keep it really clean. Like, no angry politics, and onstage cursers are punished with a paper bag over their head. (Guess what? Still superbly fun.)

-The games are lightning-fast and hilarious, and audience participation lets you feel all up in the action (without any of the stress of, you know, actually performing).

-The two teams of professional “athletes” really know their stuff and play to each others’ strengths. (Sometimes those strengths involve helping out the other team for a funnier punchline or scene ending. It works and it’s great.)

-When you get a chance to co-host one of these shindigs, you feel like a rockstar from start to finish. (My fellow Chicago Parent Magazine columnist Shannan Younger and I each captained a team and, let me tell you, I haven’t felt that cheered on since fifth grade graduation.)

-To celebrate their 30th anniversary, ComedySportz is bringing new shows from August 17th to 19th, featuring a roster of special guests and alums from three decades of performance. Plus, a portion of proceeds will benefit Funny Bones, a charity to help families at Ronald McDonald House. Full schedule details here!

And hey, I’m not the only member of this household raving about ComedySportz. There to bear witness to my triumphant/completely carried star turn were my ever-loving husband and patient seven year-old daughter. Nora giggled in the way that only a kid watching her Mom attempt to name Pokemon characters can, and P.J.? Oh, he was the one with the audience suggestions of “platypus” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

(Revenge will be sweet. And historically accurate.)
