A Friday round-up? What?!

This gloriously, actually springlike weather is giving me all sorts of happy-sharing feelings. (Don’t worry- I’m not about to sing.)

Here are some of my favorite events and things for you to know right now!

YouCom: Tomorrow, May 7th! The Chicago Youth Comedy Festival is hosting a brand-new, one of a kind (and one day only) comedy extravaganza for- and with- young audiences. From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. this Saturday, workshops running the gamut from physical improv to sketch comedy are offered by top-notch industry professionals and performers. The popular Bri-Ko will be performing their all-silent (and all-funny) show, and the Comedy Dance Collective promises to be unlike anything you’ve experienced at an improv fest. Registration runs $125 for kids 12-17 (and $65 for their chaperones), and tickets include access to all performances and workshops, snacks and lunch, a YouCom shirt, and two tickets to return for the Inoffensive Comedy Series at Stage 773. (Get your tickets here!)

Sago Mini Robot Party: (And if you’re not hooked from the title alone, I’m not sure we have much to say to one another.) Guys! The latest in the series of apps which continue to enthrall my children…has totally done the trick again and enthralled my children. Like- all three of them. Sago Mini- maker of easily maneuverable, completely charming games that inspire creativity (as well as how things work)- has added Robot Party to their solid roster. From the assembly line of robot parts (which include a staggering 58 billion robot part combos, including magnet hands and bunny slippers) to the robot’s actual “work” of building cupcakes (and, you know, smashing them at will), this is super serious fun, here. Jasper enjoyed adding three heads to his creation. Susannah liked activating her robot with the generator– surprise, surprise. And Nora? Oh, they had Nora at “cupcakes.” After all that building and creating, the robots like to unwind with an actual party. Spoiler: There’s a piñata. (Go play this game now. $2.99 on the App Store.)

(I swear this was made by one of the children.)

What Do Grownups Do All Day: (Which is a great question I ask myself daily.) Virginie Morgand’s beautiful new book– which feels comfortingly reminiscent of my favorite childhood Richard Scarry books- takes us through the ins and outs of various careers. Encased in a great canvas binding, this book for littles is a feast for the eyes- and brain. Did the books from your youth include University jobs such as “artist-in-residence?” How about female air traffic controllers? And my absolute favorite page ever? Oh, the one featuring jobs in the theater: makeup artists, ushers, set designers, stagehands, playwrights… Glorious. Just glorious. Jasper’s crazy for this fun-filled book, and would probably read it all day long (that is, if his sisters would ever give it back). (Find it at Quarto Knows!)
