This morning, I was seriously proud of myself. By 7:10 a.m., all three kids were (mostly) fed, (mostly) dressed, and buckled into the car. We swung by a friend’s house to pick up their son for carpooling. By 7:40 a.m., I had deposited two kindergarteners to the correct classroom door. Within 20 minutes, the remaining twosome and I drove back across town to pick up my preschooler’s pal for carpooling, stopping ever so briefly for a potential episode of carsickness. (Good news! All better! Do you have any snacks?) With half an hour to spare before preschool drop-off (which, everyone can agree is entirely too short a time for unbuckling at home, playing half a game, and then rebuckling in the car after potty, hand-washing, shoes, hand-washing, and lots of help with the keys), we got groceries for the week.
And if you’ve never before taken two unrelated preschoolers and a toddler to procure some produce, well then mister, have I got a life-affirming activity for you!
Back in the car, stopped home, shoved groceries somewhere cold, back in the car, walked two preschoolers into school (with confused/tired toddler in tow), washed some more hands, back in the car.
9:03 a.m.
And this is usually the part of the story where I confess how badly I mixed things up, who wasn’t wearing what, or which family member was wracked by tears…but it didn’t happen. Not today, anyhow. Not by 9:03 a.m., anyhow. And that feels FLIPPING AMAZING.
Especially since Friday afternoon saw us off to Minnesota (after Jasper and I reviewed a show, natch) for our weekend o’ 2 weddings awesomeness (the latter of which ended Sunday at 7 p.m. in the Illinois suburbs). There is too much to share. Lemme sum up:
- St. Paul is utterly fantastic. Why didn’t you all tell me how utterly fantastic St. Paul was?!
- I got to see a good friend and her talented/adorable/fun offspring.
- Our favorite college kid/manny pretty much raised my three kids from Friday night to Saturday night. (And showed them around campus, took them to a carnival, tucked them in at night, and directed me to buy the world’s best cheese for them. Now that’s a helper.)
- I had a burger which was stuffed with cheese, covered in pickled ginger, and had it’s own little dipping cup of coconut curry. Yes, that gets its own line item.
- Jasper wore a 2T pinstriped three-piece suit. Yes, it hurt my ovaries.
- Neil and Hillary were absolutely gorgeous.
- There are forest preserves in the Illinois ‘burbs worthy of postcards. And sometimes, if you have a wedding there, you get to jump on a bouncy castle, too.
- The second wedding featured a bouncy castle.
- Nat and Rachael were absolutely gorgeous.
- Did I mention P.J. performed both wedding ceremonies? (He’s absolutely drunk with power now, marrying people and things to other people and things.)
- 5:45 a.m. seemed like a joke today. And even though my kids didn’t find it funny at all, I’m smiling enough for all of us.
Must be all that Midwestern matrimony.
