Friends, over the weekend Skelebration was skelebrated by my children. (Remember way back to last week when I talked about touring the facility? Which sounds way more important that it ought?) This magical, seasonal, and otherworldly playground is a choose-your-own adventure of the spookiest kind- inside a theatre company’s lofty (and tricked out!) warehouse.
And seriously. The theatrical explosion that is Redmoon has done it again. How they’ve managed to reinvent something which blew the minds straight outta the skulls last season is beyond me…but that’s not my job to figure it out. MY job, however, is to point Nora and Susannah in the general direction of this kind of extravaganza and whisper- “That. Go see that. Play with it/climb on it/immerse yourself in it and then do it again. No, I have no IDEA what this does. Isn’t it wonderful?”
And like the good little children that they are, they were only too happy to comply. (As was their oh-so willing father.)
There was “Heck’s Kitchen,” a cooking class with none other than the devil himself. Anyone for some deviled eggs?
There was “Boo-vinia,” a lovely place to recline for a picnic. (Hint: If you hand the fish guy your cracker, he’ll help you out to some Cheez-Wiz. Which, for some awesome reason, thrilled my children.)
There were treats galore, including a chocolate apothecary room (full of dippable delights), and other gastronomically fantastic bites provided by Eli’s Cheesecake, Chicago Root Beer, and so many others.
There was the Celestial Swing, a peaceful place to soar to the clouds- amidst “grass,” deer, and other pastoral things.
There were roving performers and- seriously, I can’t even do them justice here. I mean, did you SEE the fish person helping Zu to the cheez?
There was the UFO Carousel, where Nora had the chance to ride off on a flying saucer amidst bubbles.
Between all of those things my kids adored- and the gazillion chances to play around with cinematic fabulousness and spook yourself silly (upstairs in the haunted house for bigger kids, obvie)- you’ll be hard-pressed to do it all on one go ’round.
But seeing as there’s only one weekend of Skelebration left, you’re really gonna want to try.
