RoundUp: Halloween Fun, A Made-Up Word & I’m In Print!

Oh, this past week. It’s been a week, this week.

And yes, I realize that it’s only Wednesday.

Stuff I Did While Pretending It Was Already Friday Evening:

  • Remember when I questioned Susannah’s DNA– but only slightly and in joking conversation? Well, I one-upped myself in creepiness and painted her hair and face. NOW it all makes sense.
  • My daughters are already better swimmers than me. And they’re 3 and not-yet 5.
  • I interviewed a kindie rocker superstar and the Artistic Director of a fantastic theatre company and got them to admit that they both had seen Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.
  • There’s no online link to click through for this one…because it was in print. In the Chicago Tribune. In a full-page article. In a scenario where my name was both prominent and spelled entirely correctly. Which- and I realize this is gauche and embarrassing and a signifier that I should not be allowed in print- but it was the coolest and most thrilling thing I’ve done while in Chicago. Outside of birthing multiple children. (Similar expletives were uttered, however, but in crazy different tones of voice.)

And now…

Incredibly Cool Things To Do Around Chicagoland:

Dig autumnal activities with the kids but still want to get your shop on? Head to Westfield Mall (between Bloomingdale’s and Crate & Barrel) for hayrides, trick or treating, a costume contest and much, much more. (Like a pumpkin bounce house.) Then there’s that little thing called a relaxation station for parents and/or other adults roped into the weekend’s fall-ish activities. And personal stylist Heidy Best will be on hand for style tips, making this pretty much the best mall day ever.

Go see it: Oct. 25, 11am-4pm, Westfield Old Orchard, Skokie Blvd. & Old Orchard Center, Skokie (free, but RSVP required: http://oldorchardharvestfest.eventbrite.com)

If you can remember way back to last Halloween, I reviewed Redmoon’s Skelebration– and had the funnest time watching Nora roller-skate with a skeleton and Zu try to convince us that she could go solo on the gigantic swing. WELL. This year, Skelebration is back with all-new events that- no joke- will blow the minds of anyone seeking adventure, not to mention interactive ways to procure gobs of candy. Nora and I just toured Redmoon’s space as it was in the midst of being readied for this coming weekend’s seasonal spectacle- and oh my goodness, friends, you’re gonna want to see this one. Think of it as a walk-through Choose Your Own Adventure with an opulent Halloween bent: A dip-your-own chocolate apothecary? An airbrushing tattoo parlor? How about the ability to star in your own mini movie? Decadent yummies and cool takes on carnival games?Whichever room you first choose to explore, there’s no doubt that every inch of this warehouse is being utilized in extremely fun, impossibly stunning ways. Older kids will want to check out the upstairs haunted Nest, and the younger set will be thrilled to picnic of the “lawn” of Boo-vinia. (And by “younger set,” I mean me. I will be thrilled to picnic on the lawn of Boo-vinia.)

And because I want you guys to have the best of everything sooner than anyone else, here’s the map o’ fun:

Skelebration 2014 Map

Holy moly, this event will be ridic.

Go see it: Oct. 18-26, 2120 S. Jefferson St., Chi (www.redmoon.org)

And because I can’t possibly have a post solely about promotional stuff (mine or otherwise), here’s a snapshot of my morning- and a huge clue as to why I can’t even begin to stay ahead:

Me (washing dishes): Keep half an eye on your brother, guys. I’ll be right there.

Nora: But Mom!

Susannah: BUT MOM!

Jasper: Gaaaaaah.

Me: WHAT?! (I run.)

Nora (crying): He’s wiiiiiiiibbling.

(I see Nora, Jasper, and Susannah sitting on the floor. Jasper has a fistful of Nora’s hair.)

Susannah (nods): He shouldn’t wibble.

Me: What?

Nora (angrily): No wibbling, Jasper!

Jasper: ….

Me: …

Nora (to Susannah): He doesn’t know any better, he’s a baby.

(Susannah nods sagely.)

The End.

Have a great Wednesday, friends.

Try not to wibble.
