The biggest news of the day: my firstborn kid, Miss Nora Jane, IS NOW FIVE YEARS OF AGE. Making me…a little over 29. (And don’t worry, she’ll get her own dedicated post tomorrow. I know the rules of how things work ’round here.)
Everything else kinda pales into comparison to that time my kid was suddenly in the world, but if I must…
Stuff That I Did That Wasn’t As Great As Giving Birth For The First Time Ever:
- P.J. was born this month, too. (Have you noticed my predilection towards hanging out with/birthing Scorpios?
- While I was in Boston last weekend, I nearly lost an eye. It was just as whimsical as it sounds.
- Sometimes I get to promote the coolest theatrical/Halloweentacular events. Here was one for Redmoon.
- Nora’s birthday party was hosted by this incredibly cool art studio. These are the reasons I want to have MY party there, too.
- And then are those times that Netflix allows you to write about The Mighty Ducks (2).
- Over at Chicago Parent, I reviewed Goldilocks & The Three Bears at Emerald City. And loved every second.
- Keeping up with his family’s tradition of aging faster than I care to admit, Jasper turned 10 months old. I know.
- And ten years ago, I met this guy. It was a doozy.
Chicago Stuff You Need To Know (Aside From The Fact That It’s Nora’s Birthday:
Hey friends, you know how you love the Museum of Science & Industry? (The MSI, if you’re savvy/go there year ’round/love them like me?) I know you do. And chances are pretty stellar that you’ll love their new exhibit, Numbers in Nature: A Mirror Maze, a rather stunning interactive showcase of all the naturally occurring patterns in nature. (Someone’s husband over here will positively froth at the mouth for this one.) And here’s something else, pals: through October 31st- this Friday- you can get into the MSI for 50% off. Go here to print out your voucher. And go have fun. Like you have a choice there.
So, this one makes me super happy: Two Pence Theatre Company is having their 3rd annual Fall Festival of Shakespeare (modeled after Shakespeare & Company’s successful school programs in Western Massachusetts which I was totally a part of for years and years) and they’re working with Dundee-Crown high school students in Carpentersville, IL. After a ten-week intensive program, they’re mounting their production of MacBeth (I’m enough of a theatre nerd to be wary of writing that out anywhere, let alone typing it)- and you should totally go support this fantastic program and what’s sure to be a fantastic show. And guess what? The whole family is invited to this one- rare for the Scottish play, no? Go here for all the details. And be wary of those born not of woman. Just to be safe.
And to finish out on a Halloween-y note, those of you in the Lakeview ‘hood (or those within walking/driving/training distance) should head over to what’s arguably their coolest grocery store- Treasure Island (at 3460 N. Broadway, Chicago)- for their FREE Haunted Island on Friday, October 31st (from 4-11pm), an outdoor event featuring food trucks from La Cocinita, Bridgeport Pasty and Chicago Cupcake, a costume contest, drinks (for the littles, and the not-so littles), a viewing of the PG-friendly flick Shock Treatment (a follow-up to everyone’s favorite cult film The Rocky Horror Picture Show), and a roasted pig. Making it pretty much the most fun Halloween event ever.
Unless you’re the pig.
Happy Halloween, friends!
