Disclaimer: I am not being paid to review this book. I am under no obligation to review this book. It just so happens that I love Dr. G as a person and respect the heck out of her as a family physician and all-around incredible advice-giver. Proceed.
Get the Behavior You Want…Without Being the Parent You Hate. Sounds brilliant, right? But, depending on the day, it also sounds the teensiest bit impossible. (Right?)
Friends, I am so stoked to have read Dr. G’s latest book, with the aforementioned title up there. (That’s Deborah Gilboa, MD, mom of four boys and international speaker, in case you’re not on an informal, thank you for changing how I parent my kids kinda basis, which I’d wager you will be soon.)
There are oh-so many things to love about this book, you guys. The chapters are clear and concise- and tailor-made for skipping around to what’s affecting you and your kiddos at that very moment. Mealtime manners? (“Teach your children to say the following three things after every single meal and they will be the most amazing guests ever, whether they are 3 years old or 17.”) Playdate problem? (“…The rules in your home are not negotiable, even with guests.”) Head to whatever chapter you need…and, if you’re like me, bookmark a few for future hyperventilation, such as making filling out forms part of the kid’s responsibility from an early age on, and having boyfriends/girlfriends way earlier than expected. (Or, in the instance of some guy I know, any age is earlier than expected.)
Dr. G is funny and incredibly frank, and Get the Behavior You Want…Without Being the Parent You Hate reads like sitting down for coffee with your sensible friend- the one who always seems to know what’s up. My favorite thing about this book (and Dr. G, if I’m honest), is that it’s chock full of advice that, upon reading, makes instant (and obvious) sense. It’s all stuff that you KNOW you should be doing…it’s just that life gets in the way and you forget how simple it can be to raise a good member of society.
Consider this book your reminder that you already know how to raise good members of society.
But it never hurts to have a good family doctor on call, right?
