Disclaimer: Although we were offered a free sail by Chicago Sailing, I was in no other way compensated and all thoughts, opinions, and sunburned shoulders are my own.
I’ve lived in Chicago for close to 12 years. And, in all that time, I’ve never been further into Lake Michigan than the holding my kid ten feet from the shoreline obligatory “swimming” thing. (And, you know, the occasional harbor dinner cruise.) This is ridiculous, considering that for roughly five years I lived within walking distance of Belmont Harbor.
And considering that I love boats. I love boats. Love love love. The Love Boat could’ve been written about me and my passion for boating. (Is that not what that show is about?)
So when I was offered the chance to spend an afternoon with Chicago Sailing in Belmont Harbor, I (carefully, in non-marking shoes) jumped at the chance. (And not surprisingly, I had no trouble finding a few pals who suited up quite nicely in their boaty best.)
Last Sunday was kind of a ridiculously wonderful day to be out on the water, and when we showed up with our snacks n’ drinks n’ copious amounts of sunscreen, we were really, really excited. Our captain- a fantastic guy named Lindsay- was superbly cool, professional, and even let us (me) pretend that we (I) knew how to sail.
People, you all need to rent or charter a boat from Chicago Sailing. Rates and deets can all be found on their site here, and honestly? I’m already planning my birthday sail next June. Seeing the skyline from hecka far out into Lake Michigan’s waves was just gorgeous, and I’m pretty sure I was meant to forever perch on the bow of a sailboat like a very loud mermaid.
All of the folks at Chicago Sailing are extremely nice (and, more importantly, knowledgeable). Summer sails aren’t just for the country club set, guys! It couldn’t be easier to set up a day of absolute perfection out on the water. Go. Go do it now.
I’ll meet you there. It’s really no trouble at all. Honestly.
